Shelby County Good Neighbors Farm Tour

The Shelby County Good Neighbors Farm Tour is September 17, 2022. From 9 am to 4 pm your family can enjoy 9 farms in Shelby County for FREE! This is a great opportunity for families to get up close with farm animals, farm equipment, watch special demonstrations, and meet the wonderful farmers! There's something for everyone on this farm tour.
On the day of the tour pick up your Farm Passport at one of the following three locations: Shelby County Farmer's Market, Simpsonville Farmer's Market or any participating farm to pick up a map.

Visit as many farms as you like, for as long as you like! Before you leave each location, have your Farm Passport stamped. Leave your passport at your last location to be entered to win a basket filled with Shelby County and Kentucky Proud products (one entry for each stamp on your passport).

Helpful Hints:
Wear comfortable and supportive shoes because you may have to walk on uneven or rough surfaces.
No dogs are allowed on the tour.
Bring a cooler to store items you may purchase at some locations and water/snacks for along the way.

Did we mention that this tour is free? How awesome is that?! There will be food sold at some locations, as well as specialty products for a fee.

My family went on the farm tour last year and loved it! We ran out of time and only visited about 7 of the 10 farms. We got to pet and learn about alpacas, horses, and dairy cows. We learned about honey bees at one farm and how maple syrup was made at another. We enjoyed a nice lunch at Mulberry Orchard, followed by a hay ride around their orchard- we even got to pick a pumpkin! It was a great day, and we can't wait to have more farm fun this year! My girls are looking forward to feeding some pigs this year.

Keep up to date with the farm tour on Facebook- Shelby County Good Neighbors Farm Tour.

Enjoy your family fun down on the farm!

5 Tips for Families Visiting Churchill Downs

photo FAD-1_zpsp2hw74oa.jpg

Churchill Downs is such a fun and exciting place to visit- and not just on the first Saturday in May!

We've compiled a list of 5 Tips for Families Visiting Churchill Downs.

1. Churchill Downs has Family Adventure Days coming up! Not only will there be live horse racing, but lots of fun kid-friendly activities! There will be inflatables, a petting zoo, stick horse races, face painting, pony rides, and more!

2. Visit the Kentucky Derby Museum while visiting Churchill Downs! Check out these downloadable activities before heading to the museum! When you get there, make sure to look at the back of the Museum Map they hand out to all of their guests. There are fun and tricky trivia questions on the back. Find the answers throughout the museum, and then show it to the front desk for a prize! The museum itself is very kid-friendly with many interactive exhibits! Children under 5 are FREE to the museum!

3. Download the Churchill Downs app for your phone before you go! It helps you map out the nearest restrooms, concession stands, atms, and historical icons at the track. You can skip long lines for food and drinks with Express Pick-up or In-Seat Delivery (certain sections). You can even place bets directly from your phone (iOS). There's so much useful information on the app!

4.  Make sure to visit the Paddock area with the family. There you will get an up close look at the horses and jockeys as they are preparing for their upcoming race. Sometimes the jockeys will will even stop and talk to the kids!

5. During Spring, Summer, and Fall meets children 12 and under are FREE with General Admission pricing! This does not include Derby, Oaks, Downs after Dark, and other select days during the Spring, Summer, and Fall meets. Seating is first come first served, but I have always found great seats!

Note: To participate in Family Adventure Day activities, children over 2 must purchase a ticket.

Mulberry Orchard is a family farm in Shelbyville run by Matt and Amanda Gajdzik. It is located at 1330 Mulberry Pike. They have a market with farm fresh produce such as squash, zucchini, cucumbers, and juicy peaches in the summer. They grow 15 varieties of peaches and 17 varieties of apples! They hope to have u-pick in the future when the trees are more mature. They also sell local honey, eggs, preserves, jellies, freezer chicken and pork, beef jerky, and unique gifts.

photo IMG_2071_zpsdpmxou4q.jpgMulberry has a covered picnic area where you can enjoy some of the yummy food they have to offer. They sell an array of lunch items and delicious treats like apple cider doughnuts and fried apple/peach pies! The picnic tables are conveniently located near a children's play area that includes a huge slide, swings, large tractor tires, a corn bus, tunnels and lots of room to run. It's a great place to have lunch, relax, and let the kids be kids! You can pay for a family pass that is good for the entire season.

In the Fall, visitors can enjoy hayrides to the pumpkin patch, corn mazes, and special events.

This family farm in Shelbyville is also the perfect place for an educational school trip or group tour! The fee per student is quite low and a great way to show kids first-hand what happens on a farm.
