Indoor Fun in Shelby County!

Cold? Rainy?  Here's our list of 5 indoor places in Shelby County that provide lots of family fun!

 photo Indoor_zpsixiqusif.jpg

1. The Library! We are blessed with an amazing library in Shelby County! Check out all the fun things happening at the library here! Watch for their special events, you never know what they have planned. There's something for everyone in the family!

2. Kaleidoscopes! It's so affordable for kiddos, and admission for parents is free now! The kids can play all day for that price. They have great little areas set up for parents to relax or hook up to the wi-fi and get some work done. They also have a cute little restaurant!

3. Family Activity Center! My two daughters (ages 5 and 2) and I can get a day pass to the FAC for only $10! We usually spend the whole time we are there in the pool! We love the kiddie pool and the frog slide. It may be freezing outside, but that pool is so warm!

 4. Miller Outdoor Education Center at Red Orchard Park. It is open on Saturdays from Noon-4pm and it's FREE (we love free)! My family recently visited one Saturday, and we were amazed at how many hands-on, interactive exhibits they had. My daughters are still pretty young, but this place kept their attention for a long time. We were welcomed by two volunteers who were extremely nice and helpful. They told us about the different rooms and were always easy to find if we had questions. If you have never been, I would highly recommend spending some time there.

Some of the exhibits we really liked (subject to change) were:

  • Take A Chance- You put your hand through a hole in a wooden box and try to guess what you are feeling. Then lift the top to see if you were right.
  • Making Tracks- There was a long table with sand and the children can use different animal track stamps to make tracks in the sand.
  • Something's Fishy- An exhibit of fish that live in Kentucky waters.
  • Bees- There's a tree trunk with a bee hive in the middle (the bees weren't back on display yet, but they said they would be soon)
  • Aquarium of fish, turtles, and frogs
  • Duck, Duck, Goose- Try to guess the name of the water fowls
  • Pictures/history of the park
  • Bird Nest Display- Many different examples of nests and eggs found in Kentucky
  • The Center also has educational programs throughout the year. You'll have to follow them on Facebook or visit/call to keep up to date on these programs.
5. Go watch a movie at Regal Shelbyville Stadium 8. Did you know if you sign up to be a Regal Crown Club member (which is FREE to do) you can get 25% off candy on every Monday and 50% off any size popcorn every Tuesday!  (Discounts subject to change)

Stay warm, dry and have fun!

Shelby County Fitness

The new year brings lots of resolutions to get into shape! Here's a few places around Shelby County where you can do just that!

 photo FITNESS_zps4r8aitms.jpg

The Shelby County Library is a great place to exercise for FREE! They have Zumba on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 pm for adults 18 and over. They have yoga on Mondays from 10:30-11:30 and 12-1, Wednesdays from 12-1, and Thursdays from 1-2. They also over line dancing on Wednesdays from 5:50-6:50. All these classes are free, but they would like for you to register at 633-3803 ex. 11.

The Family Activity Center in Shelbyville is a great place to get into shape. They have a basketball court, indoor/outdoor track, fitness room, and a lap pool (and kiddie pool). They also have several fitness classes that are free for members, but nonmembers can also pay to participate. See a list of classes here. The best part- they have a nursery during most class times that is free to members! See nursery times here.

Fit4Less just opened its doors in December in the Village Plaza shopping center. They have state of the art equipment that is available 24 hours a day to members! Membership info here.

Shelby Fit For Life is located at 169 Alpine Drive in Shelbyville. They also feature a keyless entry that allows members 24/7 access. Shelby Fit For Less has fitness equipment as well as on and off site group classes and workshops. They have boot camps that start today- call 647-7867 to get more information or to sign up and get started! Make sure to like them on Facebook because they have done Mommy & Me yoga in the past, and may do it again soon!

Looking to get your kids moving and exercising through gymnastics? Discovery Gym in Shelbyville is now registering for their winter gymnastics session. Register here.

Bourbon Barrel CrossFit across from WalMart is another great fitness facility in Shelbyville. They have Crossfit Kid and Teen classes! Check them out on Facebook to see their schedule and learn more about what they offer!

There's also Cross Fit Run A Muck on Mt. Vernon Drive in Shelbyville! They can help you with personal training, strength & conditioning, and intense fitness workouts!

Do you want to exercise with your child? Try Stroller Strides®! It is a stroller-based fitness program designed for moms with little ones. Each 60-minute, total body workout incorporates power walking, strength, toning, songs and activities. Certified fitness instructors offer a variety of fun class formats both indoors and outdoors. They also offer a free playgroup with Our Village so moms can form lasting friendships with other moms through organized playdates, moms' nights out, and activities for the whole family.

photo Parklands and Stroller_zpsy9fjemn1.pngThe moms of Shelby County are lucky to be close enough to Louisville to enjoy the Louisville East Fit4Mom group that meets at The Parklands in the warmer months, but they also meet at several indoor spots during the cooler ones (Oxmoor, Babies R Us, Westport Baptist)! Follow them on Facebook to stay up to date with their meeting times and playdates. They even have family fitness days where the whole family can get involved and be active. They did one at Mulberry Farms last Fall!

Don't forget about the new Clear Creek Greenway trail that opened up in Shelbyville. That's a great place to enjoy on the not-so-cold Winter days!

Here's to a happy and healthy 2016!
