Ways to Give Back in Shelby County

 photo The_zpshriwhjtm.jpg

Let's help make this amazing community even better by showing love and kindness to all those in need- not just this holiday season, but all year long! Here's a few places to donate toys, clothes, or time!

The Shelby County Fire Department is collecting toys and money for their annual toy drive until December 15 at Fire Station 1. 100% of your donations go to helping children in Shelby County. There are also several Toys for Tots boxes set up around town to collect new toys for children in need.

The Shelby County Library is having a Shoe Box Challenge. They are asking that you decoratea  shoe box, fill it with personal hygiene items, and then drop it off at the library before December 17th. Boxes will be donated to the Serenity Center in Shelbyville. They are trying to reach their goal of 400 boxes- let's help them out! Examples of items to include in box include soap, toothbrush/paste, combs, shaving cream, razor, lotions, deodorant, etc.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby County is accepting donations for the families in need that they serve. They are always looking for mentors and community leaders to serve on their advisory board. They have mentors waiting to be matched with youth ages 7-16. If you want to be a Big Brother or Big Sister call 753-3745 or visit bbbsky.org today!

Help a child or family in need through the Angel Tree. There are several angel trees around the county that still have angels that need to be adopted. Kroger has a tree full of angels looking for food donations or gift cards. Call local churches to see if they still have angels or families in need of assistance.

Do you knit or crochet? If so, A Place to Sleep, needs volunteers who can knit or crochet blocks for blankets. Free yarn and hooks/needles are available if needed. Contact Lynn Whittaker at 321-7116 if you can help out with this great ministry.

Soles for Souls at Central Baptist Church, 1958 US 127 Bypass-North. They are collecting new and clean used footwear of various types to donate to people in the community and around the world that may need them.

Crestview Care and Rehabilitation is looking for volunteers to help residents through arts, crafts, games, music, reading, and other activities. Crestview will also host small groups to include interested residents for community or religious involvement. Call Brittany Mitchell at 633-2454 to volunteer today!

Therapeutic Riding Association Inc. of Louisville (T.R.A.I.L) is located in Simpsonville and is looking for individuals who enjoy horses and working with special needs children and adults to help assist with therapeutic riding lessons. Call Nathalie Green at 876-7844 if this sounds like something that you could assist with.

You can donate your gently used items to Operation Care or Centro Latino on Main Street.

Shelby County Animal Shelter is looking for volunteers to walk, play with, and socialize with dogs and cats. Call 633-0009 to volunteer today! Tyson's Chance Animal Foundation is always looking for donations of various items. Like them on Facebook to keep up with what they are in need of the most.

An easy way to give back is to make sure your Kroger card is linked up to your local school, church, or nonprofit through their Community Rewards program. It's an easy way to raise money for your organization, just by shopping at Kroger and swiping your card!

I'm sure there are many other great ways to give back in Shelby County. If you know of any that you would like to add to the list, please email me at Kimberly@louisvillefamilyfun.net and I will gladly add it! Thank you!

Light the Night Corn Maze at Mulberry Orchard

photo 0919151249-2_zpset8jqsdf.jpgThere are several corn mazes around, but how many of them are you allowed to go into at night?! Mulberry Orchard in Shelbyville has added an extra thrill to their corn maze by allowing people to do just that during their Light the Night Corn Maze event. Make sure you bring your flashlights (they're required) and head over to 1330 Mulberry Pike! You and your family can try to make your way through their maze using only the moon light and your flashlight. How fun! And as an added bonus- when you do make your way to the exit there will be a bonfire waiting! Bonfires are a fall staple! My daughter's love to roast marshmallows and sit around the fire telling not so scary stories. Mulberry will have everything you need for s'mores available to purchase, or you can pick something else up from their yummy kitchen- apple cider, doughnuts, snacks, etc.
The weather is going to be perfect, the staff is the friendliest around, and the orchard itself is a beautiful place to spend this Fall night! Go have some fun and make memories that will last forever!

 photo 14641925_1160689610665920_4296469447605562491_n_zpsvgkfqzar.jpg
Woodworking Maniak

There's a new shop opening on Main Street in Shelbyville this Saturday, October 22.
The Woodworking Maniak store will open at 545 Main Street, next to Sixth and Main Coffeehouse.

The Woodworking Maniak is a family owned and operated business. Timothy Babb and his whole family are invested in this business, including his wife Amy and two children Alex (10) and Sarah (1). Amy will help run the store while Tim is off-site in the workshop building more items. Timothy, who is also a member of the Shelby Regional Arts Council, creates wonderful hand crafted items from local (and some exotic) wood. He sources nearly all of his lumber in Kentucky from two sources, McInturf Sawmill & Kiln and Bagdad Lumber. Because most of his lumber is from Kentucky, he has been granted the Kentucky Proud status for the past few years.

Some of his items include pens, games, custom signs, wine holders, cutting boards, and more! Check out his website here to view some of these amazing wood creations and even watch videos on how some of them are made.

Here's a little more info about Saturday's Grand Opening Celebration:

  • Ribbon Cutting at 10 am
  • First 50 people in line can enjoy a free beverage from Sixth and Main Coffeehouse.
  • Sign up for their newsletter between 10 am and 4 pm and be entered to win one of three gift cards valued at $100, $50, and $25! (Don't need to be present at time of drawing)

Business hours will be:
Monday & Tuesday 10-6
Wednesday & Thursday CLOSED
Friday 10-8
Saturday 10-4
Sunday CLOSED

Like them on Facebook here to keep up to date with all the cool happenings at The Woodworking Maniak.

Family Aquatic Center in Frankfort

The Family Aquatic Center (Juniper Hills Aquatic Center) in Frankfort is still opened during the week (11:30-7:00) until August 12th.

Starting August 13th, they will only be opened on Saturdays (11:00-6:00) and Sundays (12:30-6:00).
September 4th is the last day of the season!

My family went for the first time last weekend, and we loved it! They had so many different activities for every member of the family. My youngest, who is three, enjoyed the spray ground area and the shallow area that had a slide and climbing feature with a large bucket above it collecting and dumping water every few minutes. My five year old loved trying to jump across the lily pads that crossed one section of the pool. She also enjoyed the very tall rock wall, but didn't climb too far up. Everyone in the family enjoyed the wide red slide because we could all go down together. There were two other slides, which were faster, but still perfect for kids. My favorite was the lazy river. There were single and double tubes available to float around the river on. We went at 4 and took advantage of their twilight hours (half off admission)! You're not allowed to bring in food, but they had a nice concession area with reasonably priced food. We spent three hours there, and still weren't ready to leave! We will definitely be back before they close for the season!

Fees:
Children 2 and under are FREE!
Children ages 3 to 10 are $4
Youth ages 11 to 17 are $5
Adults ages 18 to 59 are $6
Seniors ages 60 and over are $5

Twilight hours start at 4 pm and admission is then half off! We took advantage of this offer last weekend and the whole family got in for $10!

Kroger has an online ordering program called Click List. Basically, you order your groceries online and then schedule a time to go pick them up. This a-maz-ing program is now in Shelbyville at the Kroger on Boone Station Road!

Here are some key points:
  • Your first three orders are FREE, orders after that are $4.95.
  • Browse through the products online and add what you want to your cart.
  • Your 'favorite' products, recently purchased products, and sale products are visible for easy access.
  • You get to schedule your pick up day and time!
  • Drive around back to the loading docks at your scheduled time and your groceries will be loaded into your car for you!
  • You can use your debit or credit card, which will be charged on the day of pick-up.
  • You can use digital coupons to save money!

Read all about it and even watch a how-to video here.
