Finchville Baptist Church is hosting an egg hunt March 31st 10am-2:30 at Finchville Park.
Egg hunts for all ages to include adults.

Star Family Circus

The circus is coming to town! 

The Star Family Circus will return to Shelbyville on March 11th.

We confirmed this date via the fairgrounds website but there is no other information online. Here are the details from previous years. If we find new info for this year, we will update this post:

They will perform at the Shelby County Fairgrounds Building at 3:00 and 6:00. 

Prices:

$12 for Adults

$6 for Students (13-17) 

Children (12 and under) are FREE!

My family has attended the Star Family Circus the last two years and had a blast each time. In the past they allow children to watch from the floor right outside the ring. My children loved being so close to the performers. They have all the great circus acts- jugglers, clowns, aerialists, dogs, acrobats, and even had motorcycle daredevils last year that put on a great show. They have reasonably priced refreshments for purchase as well.

It's a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Sport Programs with Simpsonville Parks and Recreation

Simpsonville Parks and Recreation offers a variety of sports programs for kids of all ages and abilities.

Coming up, they are offering:
Basketball for pre-K through 7th grade
Preschool sports sampler - looks great!
Spring Soccer
Tee Ball
Baseball (coach pitch and player pitch)

Fees range from $50 to $70 depending on the program.

Winter Break Fun!

Here's some fun ideas for over winter break

Spend the day at the Family Activity Center in Shelbyville. Who says you can't go swimming in the summer? They have a great indoor lap pool and indoor kiddie pool!  Check out their daily fees here.

Hike! It may be Winter Break, but that doesn't mean it's going to feel like Winter everyday. The temperatures may warm up a bit. If that's the case, hit the trails. We have some great ones in the area, especially the new Clear Creek Greenway Trail. If the weather's nice you could also try geocaching! It's free and fun.

Let the kids burn off some steam at Kaleidoscopes Indoor Playground. They can play all day for one price. They have great little areas set up for parents to relax or hook up to the wifi and get some work done. They also have Nerf Wars on 12/19.

Go watch a movie at Regal 8 Shelbyville.

Get a treat at Baskin Robbins. It's never too cold for ice cream!

Check out the library's calendar fun over winter break! They will be open several days during Winter Break. Whether you're going to story time, using the computers, letting the kids do some puzzles/games in the children's area, or checking out books- there's always something to do at the library.

Penelope's Pottery and Gogh Crazy are also a great places to get some indoor fun creativity going and they have some special events coming up.

Head to Louisville for some ice skating

Head to the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass for their special events.

Gingerbread House Decorating Party

Shelby County Parks and Recreation is hosting a fun party on December 8th at the Family Activity Center. For two hours, decorate your own gingerbread house without making all of the mess at home.  It's $15 at the door but if you pre-register by end of day today (December 6th), it's just $10 so hurry up!

Santa will be there and they will have hot chocolate for a treat. This is a great thing for your entire family or for your kids. Bring friends and make memories!

Winter Library Fun

The Shelby County Library is such a wonderful place! There's always so much to do there. Here's some of the fun activities going on this Winter at the library. 

Story Time:
Tuesdays 10 & 11
Wednesdays 10 & 11
Thursdays (Baby Story time) 10 & 11

Lego Club:
November 30 at 4 pm
December 28 at 4 pm
January 25 at 4 pm

February 22 at 4 pm

Stress Free Hour:Wednesdays and Fridays 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. Puzzles, coloring, knitting, scrapbooking, Scrabble, and Mahjong. Supplies provided. You can also bring your own things.
Christmas at the Library is December 9th from 10am-noon

Uniquely U Painting (adults 18+) is December 16 from 10 am to 12 pm. Paint and instruction is free (registration required), but you do need to bring a 16 x 20 canvas.

Yoga is on Mondays from 12-1pm, Thursdays from 1-2pm (for seniors). Bring your mats - it's free
Zumba is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 pm for adults - it's free
Nia is on Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30pm - it's free

Kaleidoscopes Indoor Playground

Kaleidoscopes Indoor Playground is located at 525 Main Street in Shelbyville. It's a two story indoor playground that has a Lego  room, music wall, pretend diner/kitchen area, horizontal rock wall, train table, slides, and more! The price of admission is only $6 for unlimited play. There's also a restaurant, Laughing Leo's, located in the back. When we go we like to play for awhile, take a break to eat, and then play some more.

They host Nerf Wars that kids love so keep tabs on their Facebook page for dates or click here.

Kaleidoscopes has lots of fun planned for indoor fun for kids 12 and under. They offer parties, camps and more. They were closed for a short time but they are back open after making some changes.

What to do with all that candy....

If your children are like mine they probably had a bucket of candy from community events and school parties before it was even Halloween. Now that Halloween and trick-or-treating is over, that bucket is overflowing! I have to have a game plan as to what we're going to do with it all. Here's a few ideas that may help reduce the candy pile- and possible future dental bill.....

Speaking of dentists, Mortenson Family Dental is giving you a chance to Swap your Treats for a $5 gift card. All you do is bring in at least a sandwich size bag full of candy to any Mortenson, Braces Braces Braces, or Kid's Dentistree through November 18. Mortenson then sends all the candy to troops through Operation Gratitude. One bag per person.

Here are some other ideas:

• This could also be a great opportunity to talk to your child about giving and helping others. My family tries to make shoe boxes every year that are sent to children around the world (Operation Christmas Child). Certain types of candy are allowed to be sent in those boxes. If this is something that your family may be interested in, find more info here. There are local places that may accept candy donations as well, check with local shelters or community centers.
• Keep some for holiday baking or crafts. I'm thinking candy corn turkeys around Thanksgiving time and gingerbread men with M&M eyes and buttons around Christmas. And don't forget about those dozens of sugar cookies that will need to be decorated for your holiday parties.
• Speaking of the holidays.....save some of the candy for stocking stuffers or gifts. Or, save some for goody bags (or a pinata) for an upcoming party.

Kid's Class: First Kentuckians

I just love events that combine learning experience for families with fun. When I saw this event by the Kentucky Historical Society, I had to share it. And, it's just down the road in Frankfort.

At the Thomas D. Clark Center for Kentucky History, there is an exhibit called "A Kentucky Journey" and during this event, kids will learn from this exhibit via hands-on activities. They will do things like Native Americans did things - grind maize, harvest seeds, make clay pots and play the games that Native Americans played.  Kids will also learn what changed for Native Americans once European settlers arrived in the Kentucky area.

The event is called "First Kentuckians" and takes place on November 4 from 10:30 am-noon at 100 W Broadway St, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601. The event is geared toward children ages 6-12. This is a great event if your child is studying Kentucky history or Native American history in school.  It is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child.  You do need to register because they have limited space.  The number is 502-564-1792, ext. 4408.  You will be asked to pay when you arrive and check in at the front desk of the center.
