Tropical Snow Shaved Ice

 photo 0711151714b_zpswxxhvyd1.jpg

Tropical Snow Shaved Ice will reopen for the season April 28th at 2pm! They are located at 18 Main Street in Shelbyville.

It's the perfect treat on these hot spring/summer days (or rainy days- there's plenty of covered space). The business operates out of a small green building that sits in front of the old gas station building. There are two large picnic tables in front of the building to enjoy your treat (and pretty flower boxes, too).

photo 0711151713_zps2efztnzz.jpgThere are about 25 flavors to choose from (you can choose up to 3 flavors for your shaved ice). They also have several combinations to choose from. I ordered a small Kentucky Life (coconut, watermelon, ice cream) and it was great! My husband and 2 daughters each ordered a small Orange Dreamsicle (orange, ice cream, vanilla) and they ate/drank every last drop! They also have sugar free options available, as well as drinks and candy.

The two people inside making the treats for us were very friendly and fast. The day we went they even had music set up in the parking lot as an added treat! We will definitely be back to try out some of the other flavors :)

They are cash only!
Prices:
Small $2
Medium $2.50
Large $3
They also have dog bowl treats for $1 (bowl with plain ice and a dog bone)
These prices were from 2016, they may be slightly different.

Hours:
Sunday-Thursday 2:00-9:00
Friday & Saturday 2:00-10:00

CASH ONLY!

Beat the heat and enjoy this cold treat!

Gallrein Farms in Shelbyville

Gallrein Farms is set to open today, April 22!
Green house open 10-4
Café open 11-2

I used to think the only time to visit Gallrein Farms was in the Fall when you can take a hayride out to the pumpkin patch, go through the corn maze, or climb the giant pyramid of straw. While the Fall is a super fun time to enjoy Gallrein, a visit in the Spring is fun too.

photo Madison and Claire 2015 573_zps7chvpikq.jpgGallrein has the most beautiful greenhouses I have ever been in. They have nine greenhouses total. Inside you'll find rows and rows of colorful flowers, hanging baskets, potted plants, and other hidden gems like fairy gardens or chairs made into planters. They have one of the largest selections of flowers you will find anywhere, plus tomato plants and other vegetables ready to be transplanted into your garden at home. My daughters and I can spend over half of an hour just walking around looking at everything.

Gallrein's Market is also open in the Spring. They have lots of yummy goodies for sale like jams and produce, as well as home decor type items. They have a bakery that serves items such as hot sandwiches, chips, fudge, and candies.

One of our favorite things to do at Gallrein is visit the petting zoo, which is FREE! They recently renovated this part of their farm, and it looks great! We went earlier this week and they had many of their animals already back out in the petting zoo area, but not all. We saw goats, donkeys, a llama, a rabbit, a pig, and several little chickens running around. And you know what Spring means- baby animals! We saw baby lambs, and I heard there were more baby animals not out yet. Can't wait for the camel, my favorite, to come back out! Don't forget to bring a couple quarters to buy food while you are there so your kids can feed the animals. There is a hand sanitizing station located at the entrance gate to clean your hands before leaving.

photo 1a993694-970c-477b-85b2-25556736459c_zps2q9th9ea.jpgThe farm has u-pick strawberries from mid-May through mid-June. My family went 2 years ago to pick strawberries, and we had a blast. My daughter loved going through the fields finding the perfect strawberries. We filled up our bucket in no time, and then took it back to the greenhouse to be weighed. When we went the price was about $1.99/pound. We enjoyed a few on the way home, and used some of the others for a strawberry shortcake and other desserts. Yum! (Fresh strawberry shortcake is something they make in the bakery during strawberry season!)

Gallrein also has an old tractor for the kids to play on, a tunnel that can run through, and lots of open grass to run around on. Don't forget to check out the pond and walk out on the dock.

Have some fun on the farm!

Marilyn's Song Garden

This is a sponsored post.

Did you know we have a wonderful music program available in Shelbyville called Marilyn's Song Garden?

Marilyn's Song Garden uses the Music Together program. Music Together is a music class for parents and their children ages birth to kindergarten, where parent participation (regardless of ability) is essential for creating the stimulating environment that leads to musical development. Because the curriculum is developmentally appropriate and research-based, children participate at their own level, when they are ready, with no pressure or expectation to perform. Rather, they are encouraged to respond spontaneously to the rich, varied, and playful activities however they like, either by joining the group or by just observing. The exposure they receive to vast types of rhythms and melodies provides all they need to learn and become musical for life. Research shows that family bonds are strengthened in mixed-aged classes when siblings and parents participate together in class and at home through singing, dancing, and playing instruments.

Spring Session: April 9th through May 28th (Even though classes have started, there's still time to sign up and join this session!)

Tuition for the first child is $125 and $95 for the second sibling. Any additional siblings are free and siblings under 8 months are always free. There is a $15 registration fee (waived if you attend a demo class). The tuition fee includes weekly classes, a songbook with current semester songs, 2 CDs, a parent guide DVD, weekly parent education, and free downloads of the songs from the website. There is a referral credit of $20 for any family that you refer who joins the class, so tell all your friends and family about Music Together®.

There is also a free app called “Hello Everybody” that has free introductory songs that you can listen to prior to coming to the demo.

Lake Shelby Canoes & Paddle Boats

 photo canoe_zpse76ea3c0.jpg

Did you know that you can rent canoes and paddle boats at Lake Shelby?  It is extremely affordable too!

The rates are $8 for a 1 hour paddle boat rental and $20 for a canoe for the entire day!  You can get exercise and have fun for an entire day for less than if your family all took in a movie and popcorn together for just a few hours - totally a great deal.

And, if you really want to be outdoors all weekend, you can camp there too for just $12 a night.

Read more about it on the Shelbyville Parks and Recreation website here.
