Ribbon Cutting Ceremony set for July 28th at 6 PM!

The Shelby County Parks Department and the Health Department/Fiscal Court have together raised enough funds to build a new play structure at Clear Creek Park! This will be a multi-level structure with several different play features. The wonderful thing about this new playground is that it will be all inclusive and will be designed to accommodate ALL children, including those with disabilities. There will also be a toddler structure, shade areas, benches, swings (including ADA swings), merry-go-round, and musical pieces.

There are two additional phases that will each include an additional play feature to be added to the playground when funding has been met! They will contain components for physical fitness to help fight childhood obesity. It will also include equipment for children who are deaf or hard of fearing, blind, have cerebral palsy, autism, or other disabilities. There is an event schedules at Stone's Throw Farm on July 11 to help raise funds for the additional phases.

The Shelby County Parks Department is asking the community to help decide what to name this new playground. If you have a suggestion you can email Shawn Pickens at spickens@shelbycountyparks.com or mail your suggestion to Shawn Pickens c/o Clear Creek Park, 717 Burks Branch Road, Shelbyville, Ky 40065. The deadline for suggestions is June 5, 2015. The Playground Committee of the Parks Department will make the final decision on the name.

What do you think the name should be?

Rooted in Shelby Program

 photo Farmers amp Producers_zpsihtjhtkv.png

Rooted in Shelby is a fairly new program from the Shelby County Cooperative Extension Office. The program was created to help identify and promote the sale of products grown or produced in Shelby County by Kentucky Proud members. This includes more than just fruits and vegetables, but grains, sod, hay, honey, meat, dairy products, live animals, and artisanal products as well. The program states that their main goal is to help build a network between farmers, producers, and consumers, all while promoting the use of Shelby County products. Sounds awesome!

If you are a Kentucky Proud member and grow or produce products in Shelby County you can apply to become a Rooted in Shelby member here. You can also visit the Shelby County Cooperative Extension Service Office at 1117 Frankfort Road or call 502-633-4593 for more information. It is free! You can then get logo artwork for free to show your product is indeed Rooted in Shelby! They also have pre-made signs available for purchase.

You can still support this awesome program even if you don't grow or produce anything locally. Just look for the words Rooted in Shelby next time you're at a farmer's market or local store. Here is a list from their website of farmers and artisans who are currently in the program that I found very helpful. It gives you the name of the farm/business, location, where they sell their products, contact information, and additional information you may need to know.

Help spread the word about this program to anyone you know who grows or produces in Shelby County. Help support these members by looking for the Rooted in Shelby logo next time you are out shopping! I don't know about you, but I like to know where my food comes from and I like to support people who live in my community!

Lowe's Build and Grow

Next Build and Grow is February 13 at 10 am- A Valentine's Day Frame!

Lowe's has a Build and Grow clinic once a month that is geared towards children and is completely FREE! The clinics usually occurs the second Saturday of every month at 10am. Sometimes they have the clinics twice a month!

photo 20131109_101016_zps9yevr5it.jpgThe Shelbyville Lowe's usually has their clinic set up in the windows & door area.  After you fill out and turn in your waiver your children will each receive a wooden project kit, hammer, goggles, and apron (if they don't already have one).  There are a few tables with chairs set up, but my family usually finds a spot on the floor to work. The projects have easy to follow directions and usually only take about 20 minutes to complete. When the children are done they return their hammer, show off their completed project, and pick up their certificate and patch.

Even though it is a free event, they like for you to register online so they have an estimate as to how many participants there will be. You will also be able to print out the waiver that you need to bring with you and turn in. Don't worry if you forget your waiver, they have extras at the store. Registration opens up a few weeks before each clinic so you have plenty of time to register. They also have the upcoming schedule online.

My daughters LOVE going to Lowe's to build. I was worried they would be too young to participate because they are only 2 and 4, but they just need a little more guidance than some of the others. They still really enjoy themselves. They love taking their projects home and playing with them. We've made cars, trains, haunted houses, flower pots, chemistry set, birdhouses, and many more!

It's a fun, free, family event that I suggest everyone take advantage of.

Happy building!
